Rare vascular tumor surgery performed at GMC Anantnag

A very rare vascular tumor surgery involving the region deep inside the nose and arising from skull base was operated at Govt Medical College Anantnag.
A doctor who was part of the surgery team told KNO that a 12-year-old boy was operated for about five hours without causing any complications.


“Operating this kind of tumor is a big leap in the achievements and evolution of ENT Department of GMC Anantnag”, he said adding that, the surgery took 4 to 5 hours and the procedure was done without any complications.
This tumor is also known as Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma (JNA).
“This particular case was operated by a combined endoscopic and lateral Rhinotomy approaches,” he said.
Notably, vascular tumor also known as Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare benign tumor arising predominantly in the nasopharynx of adolescent males.
It is an aggressive neoplasm and shows a propensity for destructive local spread often extending to the base of the skull and into the cranium.
Clinically, however, it is obscure with painless, progressive unilateral nasal obstruction being the common presenting symptom with or without epistaxis and rhinorrhea.
LENT Surgical team was headed by Prof (Dr) Sajad Majid Qazi besides Dr Salman Khursheed (Consultant), Dr Amir Yousuf(Assos Prof) and Dr Ehsan (Registrar). The Anaesthesia team was headed by Prof (Dr) Imtiyaz Naqash besides Dr Zaffar Malik (Ass Prof) Dr Omer (Registrar) and Dr Mehraj. The patient is doing well in post operative period.
Principal GMC and Medical Superintendent congratulated the whole team for performing this challenging procedure.
